The Ridge Cairn
The Ridge Cairn submitted by JimChampion : August 2007. The cairn is at the northern end of "The Ridge" - an aptly named hill on the edge of open moorland. The rubble has been cleared from the centre of the cairn to create a shelter for sheep out on the moor. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This 23 metre diameter cairn is located at the northern end of "The Ridge" hill on East Moor, part of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall.

The mound's central rubble has been cleared to make a shelter for sheep on the moor, re-using the cairn's inner ring as a wall-base. More details on the structure of the cairn can be found in the English Heritage monument scheduling (pdf document).

Notes from my visit on 23 May 2010.

This is a large stone cairn on the top of Ridge hill at the eastern end of the summit ridge. It is probably about 25 metres diameter, and has been adapted into a shelter, or perhaps even once a house of kinds. There is a 1.5 metre tall stone standing in the middle which looks like it once acted as a door post.

The views up here are stunning. Dartmoor to the east over the Tamar valley, Brown Willy to the north west, 12 Men’s Moor to the south, open moorland to the west.
