Anne T visited on 18th Jun 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 3 Mid Gleniron 2: Photos taken from NX 18753 60931, I photographed a mound approximately 20 metres to east (right) of track as walked uphill, with a cattle feeder virtually on top. I wasn’t sure that this was a cairn at all, although Andrew was certain. In fact Canmore shows there are the remains of two cairns here, one at NX 1877 6093,the other at NX 1876 6092. With the cattle feeder placed virtually on top of the cairn at NX 1876 6092 and numerous, very curious cattle in the field, I photographed these from the gate into the field.

Mid Gleniron 2 submitted by Anne T : Only cairn is only just north of Mid Gleniron 3, this is all that appears to be left of this chambered cairn, now used as an animal feeding station for the numerous cows and their calves that were in the field at the time of our visit. Chambered Cairn in Dumfries & Galloway

For more information on this Neolithic chambered cairn see Canmore ID 61608 which was last visited in 1986. An extract from their Publication Account includes details from an early excavation carried out between 1963 and 1966 reads: "The much-ruined Mid Gleniron II, 120m to the southeast (of Mid Gleniron 1), is likewise of multi-period construction. It originated in an oval cairn with an eastward-facing small chamber. A larger, south-facing chamber was then added, the enlarged composite structure being enciosed within a straight-sided cairn with southern facade. The later chamber no longer survives. To the south of each of the long cairns is a circular burial cairn, that to the south of Mid Gleniron II being a large circular mound about 17m in diameter and 2.75m high. Excavation brought to light a small closed box-like chamber at the centre, the whole structure possibly being contemporary with the nearby chambered tombs. The much-disturbed cairn to the south of Mid Gleniron I yielded a cremated human bone, perhaps originally contained within a cinerary urn. The finds from the excavations are in Nithsdale District Museum, Dumfries."

Mid Gleniron 2 submitted by Anne T : With the GPS in hand, this is the spot where Mid Gleniron 2 should be. There are indeed stone structures here, but the area has been used as an animal feeding station, so the ground is incredibly churned up. My husband had no doubt that this was the remains of a chambered cairn, but I still remain a little sceptical (although my GPS corresponds with the location given by Canmore).
