Anne T visited on 17th Jun 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 South Carnweil Standing Stone: From Kirkmadrine Church, we travelled back along the road eastwards towards the A716, we stopped off to see this standing stone, by a wall, up a hill, but not quite at the top of the hill. It certainly is a big stone. The road was narrow, so we bumped right up on the grass blocking a gated entrance to a field, ready to run back if we were causing an obstruction. After such a heavy rainstorm not half an hour before, we got quite wet walking up the hill, but it was worth it. In some ways, this made up for not being able to see the stones at Kirkmadrine very well.

Cairnweil standing stone submitted by Jackanol : I think this is quite an impressive stone. It's true there are telegraph poles close to it, but it still has a lot of presence. Taken September 2016. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Dumfries & Galloway

This stone is clearly visible from the road and is unremarkable. Awkward to photograph as telephone poles run close by. It is located near the Kirkmadriine Church collection of early Christianised stones. The Landranger OS Map shows a standing stone nearby on the slopes of a hill near Whirlpool. We looked hard for this stone but could not find it.

For more information see Canmore site no. 60446 which tells us the stone is "situated at the edge of a grass field about "260m ESE of of South Carnweil. it is roughly triangular in section, measuring a maximum of 1.1m by 0.7m at the base and 2.2m in height. The stone was removed prior to 1970, but was re-erected in 1973".

Re: Directions by markj99 on Thursday, 28 January 2021

Directions: Take the A77 Portpatrick out of Stranraer heading S. After 1.33 miles ignore the Portpatrick R turn staying straight on the A716 Drummore. After another c. 6.5 miles go past Sandhead, take the next R for Kirkmadrine Stones. After 0.4 mile turn R onto a minor road for Kirkmadrine Stones. After c. 0.45 miles you will see a small lay-by at NX 08654 48386 with a gate where South Cairnweil Standing Stone Path starts. The stone is about 180 yards S from this point beside the path.

The standing stone at Whirlpool is listed on TMP. It is now recumbent so can only be seen when close by. I have updated the page with new pictures and directions.
