TheCaptain visited on 28th Sep 2012 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Near the top of St Breock Down, this stone is easily reached along the little lanes to the south of Wadebridge. Men Gurta is the largest and heaviest standing stone in Cornwall. It is very nice up here in the sinking sun, with some terriffic views out to sea over the Camel estuary. I think the wind turbines add to the scene up here, other than their constant whining.

Near the top of St Breock Down, stands a prehistoric standing stone, Men Gurta (the waiting stone) which is the largest (4.9m length) and heaviest (16.5 ton) standing stone in Cornwall. This stone fell in 1945 but was re-erected in 1956. It is of local shale with veins of feldspar, and was found to stand in a setting of quartz pebbles within a small cairn.

This stone is easily reached along the little lanes to the south of Wadebridge, so long as you have, and can read a decent map. It is very nice up here in the sinking sun, with some terriffic views out to sea over the Camel estuary.

I think the wind turbines add to the scene up here, other than their constant whining.

Hallo Andy!

My name is Gunnar and i mail from Austria.

I have just red you information about the Standing Stones in Cornwall.

We have also a stone like your "Men Gurta" here.

We call it Mount Gurtis (http://www.gurtis.at)
and below there ist the village Gurtis.

You must know that Vorarlberg in Austria was a celtic area too.

But the romans called the celtics here the "kurtis"

In Bern, Switzerland, which is not very far from here, there is also a mountain called "The Gurten"
On top of the mountan there is a rock with a hole like your "man-an-tol"

(http://www.dillum.ch/html/tannstygli_krauchthal.htm) You must pull down to see the foto!

We also have a litte stonehenge here, but it is not so famous like yours.
The village is called "Bürser Berg". In english it means "the farmers mountain".
http://www.buerserberg.at
Our scientist assume that there must bi another 2000 stones below the earth.

Your Columban is well know here too because he evangelized here together with Gallus.
A village here is called "St. Gallenkirch"
http://www2.riskommunal.at/stgallenkirch/

We also know your "silver ball" but we do not hurle it.
We know it as crystall balll filled with water, like a lens.
Our celtics used it to send light-messages
Today you can find the ball on every church roof in Vorarlberg.

We know the syllable "wall" here too. Qur region is called The Walgau.

Have a nice time!
Gunnar
