From the small car park by the play park opposite the kirk, we followed the road up the slight hill, past the houses. The rocks are railed off, but to my surprise, walking to the top of the railings, there is a step to allow you to climb in to the compound. The markings were really clear in the strong sunlight. There must have been rain here recently, as some of the deeper bowls contained pools of water. There was also another smaller rock behind the ‘compound’ for the main rock, which someone had recently de-turfed the edges of. There were fewer markings on this, with plenty more of the outcrop under turf, so we wondered what else might lie under the grass covering. We used the interpretation board to help us pick out key motifs, such as the oval cup and the keyhole motifs. A young couple came and looked at the stone, and we were really respectful of each other taking photographs, which was nice. We would come across this young couple again at another couple of rock art sites and at Dunnad fort

Cup and Ring marks in Argyll

What a great sight this is on the edge of a housing estate. For all the modernity around it is still enthralling to be here, with so much rock art to see. Try counting the cups and rings.Text by Hamish (NB: not the same person as Hamish Fenton)

This sheet of rock art is recorded as Canmore ID 3951 and tells us the outcrop is "sculptured with over 80 cups, and 15 cups-and-one-ring, and keyhole figures. It is (partially) enclosed by a fence. Twelve feet W of the SW corner of this fence, a rock area 9' x 2' bears six cups, some in groups, and one cup-and-ring. Other outcrops in the vicinity have cup marks."

In 1985, Canmore record that an extension of the rock sheet was exposed, revealing a further forty-seven cups and five cups with rings. Also see Canmore ID 39549 which describes another outcrop 60 metres north-north-east of this stone, containing another 'collection of rock art' at NR 8580 9356 (See Kilmartin Glassary 2 in the nearby sites list below); and Canmore ID 76399 which descrbies another outcrop 15 metres east of the latter rock.

Note: Hamish Fenton has submitted sixteen amazing new 3D models he has created. These are of various subjects, from large brochs to standing stones, to detailed scans of rock art panels. Scroll down the page to see them, and follow the instructions to rotate and zoom them.

Kilmichael Glassary 1 submitted by Anne T : Just up slope from the railed off enclosure, someone had recently de-turfed another section of rock. Looking closer, this also had many motifs. What else lies underneath the turf on this hillside?

Kilmichael Glassary 1 submitted by Anne T : So many motifs! Seeing this sheet of rock decorated like this was a real treat. It must have rained here shortly before our visit, because parts of the rock were still wet, and water had gathered in the bowls.

3D Models of the prehistoric rock art panel at Kilmichael Glassary by h_fenton on Monday, 21 December 2015

3D model of the prehistoric rock art panel within the Historic Scotland enclosure at Kilmichael Glassary. Photographed from outside the fence (which was covered in wet paint) 6 October 2015.

The strong low afternoon light helps to show the rock art quite nicely, but you could also try the model in Mat cap mode to show the detail of the model by clicking on the box shape in the bottom right corner of the screen and changing the rendering mode to Matcap.

Prehistoric rock art panel just outside to the west of the fenced rock art at Kilmichael Glassary - showing a series of cup marks, there is loks to moss and grass on the panel so I have created the model without colour to help show the cup marks.
