Anne T visited on 12th Sep 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 5 Hethpool Stone Circles, College Valley: We needed to be up really early this morning, but completed what we needed to do by 9am. As there were high winds and rain forecast for this evening/tonight and for the next few days, husband suggested we make the most of the good weather and go up to College Valley. He organised a pass from Saville’s in Wooler (we were one of 8 cars today – usually there are only 1 or 2 the receptionist said). The last time we were here was over 15 years ago, in the days when I didn’t have a camera, and whilst we saw the stone circle and Little Heatha Fort, didn’t have any evidence of our trip. Considering this is marked on the map as a (singular) stone circle, it immediately looked (to me) as if there two side-by-side circles – the stones weren’t in one simple circle and they were too widespread. We climbed up to the telegraph pole up the hill to try and get a better look at the circle, but it was still too spread out (and many of the stones too low to the ground) to photograph well. Given that the small car park at the entrance to the valley was pretty full, and we saw long crocodiles of walkers, we seemed to be the only people interested in the stone circle, which was surprising.

Hethpool Stone Circles
Hethpool Stone Circles submitted by Andy B : Part of the Burnham family trip to Northumberland, August 2002 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Two Stone Circles in Northumberland, one of the stones of which is decorated with ring marks.

Two closely based stone circles, making of the biggest stone circles in the coutry, hence hardest to show in a photograph! In a lovely valley on the way up the Cheviots.

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 796 and Historic England List ID 1010332.

An extract from the Historic England entry reads: "This monument includes two stone circles located on a gravel river terrace at the head of the College Valley. The visible stones form a ruinous circle to the south whilst a group of outlying stones lie to the north. At least seven stones are recumbent. A further six stones associated with the northern group have been located below ground by probing. The evidence thus acquired suggests that the monument originally took the form of two closely spaced stone circles. The maximum height of the stones is 1m and several of them exhibit small chock stones wedged around their bases in order to keep them upright. This would suggest that they are still in their original position. The southern circle has a diameter of 61m by 42.7m with an average interval of 16m-20m between each stone, including those found by probing. The northern group measures about 60m by 45m. The whole site is overlain by ridge and furrow, indicating that this field has been ploughed in medieval times. It was during this period that many of the stones may have been disturbed."

Hethpool Stone Circles
Hethpool Stone Circles submitted by Anne T : Climbing a little way up Little Heatha hill to try and get a good view of the circle. Not obvious, but there are a couple of low-lying stones peeping up amongst the sheep! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hethpool Stone Circles
Hethpool Stone Circles submitted by Anne T : Climbing a little way up Little Heatha hill to try and get a good view of the circle. The stones lie so close to the ground, they are still difficult to see. The number of sheep scattered around the stones doesn't help, but it's a really nice setting. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Comment transferred from now deleted duplicate page for Hethpool N, submitted by anonymous on 17th September 2011:
The larger southern circle might have had ten stones in a 56 m circle, but there are really only 4 clear stones.
The north circle very likely had 13 stones in a 47 or 48 m circle (a lunar connection?), and there are 6 clear stones.
The centres of the circles are aligned quite nearly north/south, or perhaps as it was then.
Most of it is so indistinct, though, leaving much to ones pleasurable imagination.
Regards, Fin, Morpeth

To go any further by car into the valley, you need to purchase a day pass for £10 from Savill's Estate Agents in Wooler - 18/20 Glendale Road, Wooler, NE71 6DW. Phone: 01668 281611. I'm told by their receptionist that 12 cars a day are allowed in (walkers have no restrictions) and that usually only one or two passes are sold each day. We phoned up on the morning and arranged to pick our pass up a couple of hours later.
