Maen Castle
Maen Castle submitted by TheCaptain : Walking southwest along the coast path from Sennen Cove, pass the coastguard lookout shelter and head a bit further to see the shipwreck of the RMS Mülheim, wrecked March 2003, with the cliff castle clearly visible above. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This small rocky headland is the site of one of the oldest cliff castles on the Cornish coast. On the landward side it was defended by a substantial stone wall, ditch and counter-scarp bank. The ditch is deepest on the northern side of the headland, where the counter-scarp bank is revetted with large granite blocks. The stonework of the narrow entrance still stands, and just outside the gateway lies one of the former gate jambs.

Access The fort is on the coast between Land's End and Sennen Cove, on land owned by the National Trust. There is a path to the castle entrance from the well-worn coastal path, indicated by a discreet metal sign.

Maen Castle lies on a strong geometric solstice alignment that runs from Land's End - The Wash in East anglia.
It is featured on the following link which examines the alignment & follows it by satellite;

I visited the site yesterday trying to identify the location of "St Catherine's Well", referred to by John Brett as a site of one of his paintings. Have you any references to this well?

Thanks,

Bob ([email protected])

    After a delay of five years... I guess this Golden Prospect is the St Catherine's Well painting by John Brett that you are asking about. There are a few springs on the coastal slope near Maen Castle, but I don't know if any of them are called St Catherine's Well. Along this bit of coast there are many granite boulders like the one in the painting, it must be somewhere close to Maen Castle on the coast path. I think it is most likely (from examining the view in the painting, the position of the Longships rocks relative to the headland) to be the prominent boulder on the left of this photo.
