Seleni II Tomba di Giganti
Seleni II Tomba di Giganti submitted by DrewParsons : The tomb. October 2010. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Chambered Tomb in Sardegna

Megalithic tomb with semicircular arc of 15 stones. One stone in front has 3 indentations for inserting upright objects.

Additional Information submitted by Drew Parsons October 2010: This tomba di giganta (Tomb II) is dated around 100 years more modern than its sister Tomb I. This would make it around 3300 to 3400 years old ie from the Middle Bronze Age. During excavations no bones were found due to the fact that the granite from which it is constructed is very acidic and calcium bones would be disolved with rain leaching out acid from the rock so dating is from pot sherds and associated materials found at the site. There is a display board showing examples of these finds near the ticket office. There are two very interesting features at this site. The first is the existence of three granite blocks each with three deep holes carved into them, two blocks are intact and of the third only half remains. The archaeological notes for the site at the information office state that the function of these blocks can only be speculated on. The second feature is the existence of betyl or carved phallic standing stones beside the tomb. They are now all fallen. There are a number of other tombs nearby including the impressive Tomb I, and a nuraghe and village on this 1000 metre granite plateau. The ticket office is adjacent to the site and provides laminated information sheets in various languages which guide you through this and the nearby Selini I tomb. The site is located in the Bosco Seleni Park on a plateau overlooking the hill town of Lanusei. Take the SS198 north west from Seleni towards Gairo and the site is signposted on the left of this road in the Bosco Seleni Park.
