Philae Temple of Isis
Philae Temple of Isis submitted by Thorgrim : The Temple of Isis at Philae is on an island created by the damming of the Nile at Aswan and the creation of Lake Nasser. Here is the First Cataract and the mysterious land of Nubia and the Sudan. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Temple in Nubia

Started by Nectanabo of the 30th Dynasty and continued by Ptolemi II, this marvellous temple was saved from the waters in 1972, after the flooding of the old dam threatened it, rebuilt on a neighbouring island shaped to conform exactly to the old one and finally opened to the public in the late 80s. Many Roman emperors added Kiosks and side temples. The temple of Isis at Philae is by the First Cataract of the Nile. To the south is mysterious Nubia and the Sudan. Access by boat.

As a personal observation, a comparison of the coloured reliefs on the Grand Portico columns, as copied to the painting "Under the Grand Portico, Philae" 1838 by the Scottish artist David Roberts; when viewed against the post-relocation state of the same columns, reveals the disappearance of the coloured reliefs which occurred over time d...
