The base of the stone is sturdy enough to allow people to climb up to the summit. There is a round rock basin on the flat top of the Cork Stone.

Aimeeb-b visited - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 The Cork Stone is a beautiful large natural standing stone. In 1700's antiquarian Rooke described the stone part of a stone circle. This however has now been destroyed by quarry extraction.

Cork Stone
Cork Stone submitted by Vicky : The Cork Stone, Stanton Moor, Derbyshire GR: SK245628 The Cork Stone is one of a number of impressive natural outcrops on Stanton Moor. Composed of weathered sandstone it resembles a huge mushroom or cork. As with the Andle Stone nearby it is covered in graffiti from the 19th and 20th centuries and has steps carved into the side to allow access to the top. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cork Stone submitted by AngieLake : The weird Cork Stone in August 2009. Past the tree on the right is a track to the east, over the Moor. I took this one while walking to the Nine Maidens. Along it there's another track to the left that runs S-N along the east side of the summit, parallel to the one on the west side of the summit. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Stanton Moor Audio Trail by Andy B on Saturday, 13 February 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)
Offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, this hugely contested landscape is home to over seventy ancient monuments. Follow the footsteps of our ancestors on this short 2 mile walk and explore the diverse ways in which the stone beneath us, has and continues to shape the diverse landscapes on Stanton Moor.

Narrated by Aimee Blease-Bourne, who is currently working for the Moors for the Future team as Moor Care Assistant in a voluntary capacity. She recently completed her Masters degree in Social and Cultural Theory for which her dissertation concentrated on Stanton Moor.
