Chambered Cairn in Co. Dublin

Tibradden Hill is home to a prehistoric chambered cairn that has previously been incorrectly labelled as a passage tomb. The cairn measures 25 metres in diameter and about 3 metres in height. The passage into the cairn and the chamber that are visible today appear to have been created during an excavation of the site in 1849 by members of the Royal Irish Academy.

During this excavation a stone lined cist grave was found, containing pottery and cremated remains. The Irish for Tibradden Mountain is ‘Sliabh Thigh Bródáin’ meaning ‘mountain of the house of Bródáin’ and folklore suggest that this is his burial place. On the ground of the chamber a beautiful piece of spiral rock art can be seen. The views from the summit of Tibradden are a sight to behold as the cairn on Two Rocks, Montpelier Hill, Dublin Bay, the Wicklow Mountains and Howth can all be seen. A lovely planned forest walk leads to the cairn and the summit and we wholeheartedly recommend this hike, it takes just over an hour.

I have left Ireland and my walks into the Dublin and Wicklow mountains in 2001 but never forgot them. Especially one, not so far from Tallaght has kept my fantasy working for many years and yes , still today, that 1 hour walk to the summit of Tibradden mountain is still alive. To my surprise no pictures on this site and my old pictures all gone, left behind, somewhere on a USB stick.

Thanks to a contributor on Wikipedia named John King I managed to find 2 pictures. One of the Cairn not far from the summit and one of a spiral stone, part of the cairn.

But, it's not this cairn that will make me return to Tibradden. It's the feeling you get when you reach the summit and took some time to look around and touch those bolders on the slopes. Find the puzzle rock and try to explain how nature can create this. And to make sure you keep interested in this story I will ad a surprise on top . One of the rocks close to the path on the summit is great rock art and a human form whas still recognisable in 2001.

I will visit Tibradden in 2020, try to post a picture of it before I do.
