A lovely site, and pleasant to explore on a sunny afternoon. Didn't realise that this site has been excavated twice, once in 1957, and again in 1972-73, so must try and find the excavation reports, if they are available.

Ancient Farmstead and Earlier Palisaded Settlement in Northumberland

This settlement can be found to the west of the Pennine Way, 800 metres south-south-east of Bridge House and 800 metres north of Hetherington Village.

Pastscape Monument No. 16581 explains that this (small) Romano-British settlement was excavated in 1957, and was provisionally dated to the mid-second century AD. It contains "cobbled and flagged yards, circular huts, hearths, and small, stone-lined storage pits."

Historic England List Entry 1008984 gives more information, telling us that the farmstead overlies an earlier palisaded settlement. The settlement lies on a gentle east facing slope, measuring 60 metres east-west and 44 metres north-south. The exterior banks are between 2 to 3 metres wide and stand around 50 cms tall. The interior structure is complex, containing at least five hut circles "linked by low stone walls".

Historic England's entry says that excavations revealed an earlier phase of activity, were a stone packed palisade trench with irregularly placed post holes were discovered running underneath the south east wall of the later settlement. "Partial excavations in 1972-3 confirmed the presence of a timber palisade and also revealed the existence of a timber round house beneath a later stone house."

Hetherington (Wark)
Hetherington (Wark) submitted by Anne T : This boulder, at approx. NY 82507 78918, stands out in the field for its size and slightly different colour from the rest. While some holes have been enlarged by water, others are smooth and shallow (without the small 'rim' which I'm told characterises solution holes). Have been unable to get onto ERA to check if this is recorded stone. Need to dig out my Beckensall rock art books! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hetherington (Wark)
Hetherington (Wark) submitted by Anne T : Following the trackway from the eastern edge of the settlement back towards the Pennine Way, at approx. NY 82507 78918 there is a large, white-coloured boulder which stands out in the field. This has a number of solution holes, but also some very smooth hollows, which may be cup marks. Have been unable to get onto ERA to check whether or not this is a recorded stone.

Hetherington (Wark)
Hetherington (Wark) submitted by Anne T : Some of the complex internal structures within the farmstead, to the north of the central bank which splits the farmstead virtually in two. I'd love to be able to see the excavation notes to make sense of all this!

Hetherington (Wark)
Hetherington (Wark) submitted by Anne T : There is a long, low earth and stone bank which virtually splits the farmstead in an east-west direction. Once passed the eastern boundary of the farmstead, it then snakes up the slight hill to what is now a stone wall. There are some large stones in this feature.
