Ancient Settlement in Puglia
The ancient city of Cannae was inhabited from the 4th century BCE to the medieval. Many walls and pillars, a basilica and a castle can be visited on the settlement mound.
In the small museum nearby many artefacts from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, the Greek Iron Age (a Greek helmet) to the medieval can be seen. The city of Cannae is also known for the Battle of Cannae, in which the Roman army suffered a disastrous defeat by Hannibal (216 BCE).
