Smiřice Paleolithic Settlement
Smiřice Paleolithic Settlement submitted by ladrin : Distinctive terrain shift (Vote or comment on this photo)
A massive natural terrain shift / platform along the river Elbe was a safe shelter during floods and so it was settled since deepest prehistoric times. This terrain shift is clearly visible in this particular place and is cut through by the railway track.

In 1903, in the area of the old brickyard of Smiřice town was found a flint and a piece of a stag's horn from the mid Paleolithic period about 70 000 years old, when the place was inhabited by Neanderthals. Other rich archaeological findings around Smiřice belong to later periods: neolithic, La Tene and Hallstatt culture.
