The axe was found in 1957. It is thought to consist of diabase and may date from ca. 2000 BC. Nearby is the Holthausen barrow cemetery, which probably stems from the late Neolithc. Note that 'battle axe' is a recognised archaeological classification and does not necessarily mean it was used for battling.
Another stone axe, which was most likely used for work, was found in 1951 in a bomb crater in the city center of Hattingen (coordinates: 51.401476, 7.187333). It is made of amphibolite.
The mentioned stone axes as well as other stone tools found in Hattingen and near surroundings are displayed in the Stadtmuseum Hattingen.
