The area of today`s city of Hattingen (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) was already populated in the Neolithic period. Several stone tools were discovered throughout the city in the earlier part of the 20th century. However, these findings were made mostly during construction works, which were not followed up by archaeological excavations, so the corresponding house outlines were not found. Of special interest is the battle axe (lower in the picture) found in the city district Holthausen at the coordinates given on this page.

The axe was found in 1957. It is thought to consist of diabase and may date from ca. 2000 BC. Nearby is the Holthausen barrow cemetery, which probably stems from the late Neolithc. Note that 'battle axe' is a recognised archaeological classification and does not necessarily mean it was used for battling.

Another stone axe, which was most likely used for work, was found in 1951 in a bomb crater in the city center of Hattingen (coordinates: 51.401476, 7.187333). It is made of amphibolite.

The mentioned stone axes as well as other stone tools found in Hattingen and near surroundings are displayed in the Stadtmuseum Hattingen.
