Barrow Cemetery in Sogn og Fjordane
Few places in the country have the same concentration of ancient burial mounds than on the north side of Gloppefjord, especially at Vereide. In the burial ground in Vereide there have been recorded nearly 200 burials dating from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age.
In connection with the restructuring of E39 highway from Sandane to Anda there was, from 1990 to 1995, major registrations and excavation of ancient sites on that stretch. Most of the tombs lie near the former vicarage on the large terrace just above Vereide church. Most of the graves are low, but 12 mounds have a breadth of from 12 to 25 metres.
The barrow cemetery has been fenced in and is now a grazing ground for cattle. It is a part of a project to keep the smaller vegetation low, keeping only a few larger trees so the cemetery can be seen. The cemetery is overgrown with grass and low vegetation. It is just south of the main road and can easily be seen from the road.
The cemetery today contains 12 barrows, all of them are round shaped. Six of the barrows are large, from 25 to 20 metres and from 3 to 2 metres in height. Three more barrows are around 10 to 15 metres in diameter and from 1 to 2 metres in height. The last three are very small, around 5 metres in diameter and 0.5m in height. The six largest barrows have a very pretty rounded shape and seem to be undisturbed.
The cemetery also has a standing stone. It is located in the south-east corner of the fenced area, close to the fence and a modern barn building. It is around 2.5 metres in height, around 30cm wide and around 20cm thick. It almost has a square-shaped cross section. The stone surface is a little rugged and it has sharp corners.
