Runestone in Rogaland
On Helland farm there were three known rune stones. Two of these have been preserved. This rune stone is probably located where it was originaly erected around the year 1000. The stone is adorned with ornaments in the Ringerike style. The inscription is from the younger futhark. This is a runic script that was common in West Norway and Western Isles in the Viking Age.
From this time we know of several runestones in Norway. Very often the inscription includes information about family relationships. Most are made in memory of dead people, but often they maybe also have served as their legal document.
The stone is around 3 metres in height, around 40cm wide and around 20cm thick. The edges are rounded and appear to have been polished.
The runic inscription has been translated as: "Tormod made this stone in memory of Trond, his son."
The stone now stands on a mound. It is possible that this Trond is buried here, even if the stone is from the year 1000. It has no cross or inscription testifying to the Christian faith. Runestones from the early christian period often have crosses carved on them.
