Burial Chamber (Dolmen?) in Gotland

This site is described in Riksantikvarieämbetet Fornsök, the Swedish National Data Base of cultural, historic and prehistoric sites, as being a burial site with unusual features. Its mound is 7 metres in diametre and 0.4 metres high. Within the mound there are boulders which have been used for the burial chamber although subsequent reuse has seen considerable changes to the site. Riksantikvarieämbetet Fornsök date the remains to the Bronze Age and Iron Age although the Gotland official tourist website quotes the remains as being Gotland's only Neolithic dolmen. The academic paper by Wehlin (see references below) which discusses this "dolmen" seems to confuse the Gnisvärd area with the Gannarve / Ansarve site a further 10 or so kilometres south of here where it places the Neolithic dolmen as opposite the Gannarve ship setting but the Riksantikvarieämbetet Fornsök database shows no suitable dolmen site near to Gannarve.

The site described here it is just across the lane from the impressive Gnisvärd boat shaped grave. To reach the site drive south from Visby on highway 140. 2 kilometres past Tofta church turn right towards Gnisvärd and the site is approximately 1 kilometre along this lane where there is a car park. This site is on the right (north) side of the lane whilst the Gnisvärd ship setting is on the left (south) of the lane.
