EventsCountry: South Africa Hugh Newman writes: This will be our sixth conference where a bunch of standing-stoners describe differing elements of their strange but compelling addiction – the big stones of antiquity. Again, for 2011, we have gone global, because more and more fascinating sites are being discovered, not just by archaeologists but by antiquarians like you and I.For our annual Glastonbury event, we are delighted to announce that the great Robert Temple will be joining us to give us a glimpse into his new research on obscure megalithic sites from North Africa, including the biggest stone circle in the world in Morocco. He will also be sharing his new dating technique that can apparently date stone. He will also give us an overview of some incredible megalithic discoveries on the Giza plateau from his new book ‘Egyptian Dawn’.
If that isn’t enough for you, Carmen Boulter, producer of ‘The Pyramid Code’ TV series is coming over from Canada to share her insights on the Pyramids, and also share her incredible research on matriarchal societies that once prevailed in ancient megalithic cultures. John Major Jenkins will be joining us to share his research on the early Mayan shamanic traditions and outline calendric discoveries of the enigmatic Olmec and Maya cultures, when they flourished in southern Guatemala and Mexico.
Christopher Knight & Alan Butler, authors of ‘Civilization One’ and ‘Before the Pyramids’ will share what they found out about Thornborough Henge and how that knowledge somehow made it over to ancient Egypt. Other speakers and topics include:
Andy Burnham has agreed to celebrate 10 years of 'The Megalithic Portal' by doing a talk on obscure stone circles and other sites around the world. Peter Knight will be doing a talk on the West Kennett Long Barrow and the Ancient Stones of Dorset.
Lucy Wyatt, author of 'Approaching Chaos', will be discussing ancient cultures and city-states.
Hugh Newman will be exploring East Anglia in search of megaliths, stone circles and incredible earthworks.
Plus we will have a special ‘John Michell Memorial Lecture’ hosted by Christine Rhone, in honour of the original inspiration for the conference. The speaker is yet to be confirmed.
We will also be hosting another Megalithic art gallery and a half-day seminar with John Major Jenkins detailing his amazing Galactic Alignment discoveries, plus the megalitho-tours listed below:
