2011 Megalithomania Conference
2011 Megalithomania Conference submitted by Andy B : Lineup for the Megalithomania 2011 conference, including myself! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hugh Newman writes: This will be our sixth conference where a bunch of standing-stoners describe differing elements of their strange but compelling addiction – the big stones of antiquity. Again, for 2011, we have gone global, because more and more fascinating sites are being discovered, not just by archaeologists but by antiquarians like you and I.

For our annual Glastonbury event, we are delighted to announce that the great Robert Temple will be joining us to give us a glimpse into his new research on obscure megalithic sites from North Africa, including the biggest stone circle in the world in Morocco. He will also be sharing his new dating technique that can apparently date stone. He will also give us an overview of some incredible megalithic discoveries on the Giza plateau from his new book ‘Egyptian Dawn’.

If that isn’t enough for you, Carmen Boulter, producer of ‘The Pyramid Code’ TV series is coming over from Canada to share her insights on the Pyramids, and also share her incredible research on matriarchal societies that once prevailed in ancient megalithic cultures. John Major Jenkins will be joining us to share his research on the early Mayan shamanic traditions and outline calendric discoveries of the enigmatic Olmec and Maya cultures, when they flourished in southern Guatemala and Mexico.

Christopher Knight & Alan Butler, authors of ‘Civilization One’ and ‘Before the Pyramids’ will share what they found out about Thornborough Henge and how that knowledge somehow made it over to ancient Egypt. Other speakers and topics include:

Andy Burnham has agreed to celebrate 10 years of 'The Megalithic Portal' by doing a talk on obscure stone circles and other sites around the world. Peter Knight will be doing a talk on the West Kennett Long Barrow and the Ancient Stones of Dorset.

Lucy Wyatt, author of 'Approaching Chaos', will be discussing ancient cultures and city-states.
Hugh Newman will be exploring East Anglia in search of megaliths, stone circles and incredible earthworks.

Plus we will have a special ‘John Michell Memorial Lecture’ hosted by Christine Rhone, in honour of the original inspiration for the conference. The speaker is yet to be confirmed.

We will also be hosting another Megalithic art gallery and a half-day seminar with John Major Jenkins detailing his amazing Galactic Alignment discoveries, plus the megalitho-tours listed below:

(User Info | Send a Message)
I'm back from my giving talk at Megalithomania. Many thanks to Hugh and co for having me, it went down very well, and I had a fantastic time. I met lots of new and old friends and the Portal signed up quite a few new members as well.

There is a paid 'catch up stream of the whole conference you can access here
http://hughnewman.imedialibrary.com/index.php?genre=12
and I'll let you know when my talk is available for separate download.

Although it was too sunny here to spend all day glued to the computer when the overgrown garden was calling, I logged in to the evening sessions live from South Africa. Of course I could be blase about this because I know I can catch up on the remaining sessions in the next two weeks thanks to the promised 'catch up' facility.

I must say the technical presentation of the webcast has been flawless and very professionally produced with clear sound, video and slides. Some very interesting and thought provoking talks. Graham Hancock is a very good speaker and the others came across well as well.

Only slight comment, it would be useful to put something up on the screen between the talks so you can tell the stream is still connected. At one point I thought it might have finished then up popped Mr Hancock. It must have been a marathon in the hall, as finishing at 8.30 UK time is 10.30pm there, and they had been going from 9am local time! Well done to all organising, will have my popcorn at the ready tomorrow...

The price has been dropped to £29.99 for the 'catch up' on demand version of the conference. I think this is a good price and can recommend it as there is a lot to view here - 24 hours worth of video to be exact! I hope they can perhaps hold it open for a few days more than the 9 or so days we have now to go?

"West Kennet long barrow (astronomy, dowsing and short acoustic demo with drumming)"

I have drummed many times in the West Kennet long barrow. It completely absorbs me. I have lost all sense of time on several occasions only to be brought back by other visitors entering the long barrow - they always love my drumming and quite often join in. One time I reckon I was 'lost' for 4 hours. Another time we had about 15 people drumming in there. A wild experience that I will never forget. Take a big fat well-tuned djembe and walk up to the long barrow. Start slowly and steady and see where it takes you. The resonance is extreme. Around 125bpm seems to really vibrate.
I have not found a better place to play than this. I think the acoustics may have been designed specifically for percussive sounds. Any other drummers fancy rocking at megalithic sites? I am always up for a serious session.
Hand to skin . . .
