Druids Temple (Cumbria)
Druids Temple (Cumbria) submitted by giles_ingham : Close up of vandalised stone.. This is an X-rated photograph. What a sicko! Is it meant to be blood from a Druid sacrifice - or just evil stupidity? How far is this circle from so-called civilisation? (Vote or comment on this photo)
Vandals have desecrated an historic ancient monument near Ulverston for the second time in 12 months. One of the standing stones of a Bronze Age stone circle has been daubed with red paint. Last November four of the 12 stones which form an inner circle on the common were covered in paint.

One bore the cryptic message, Stop the Gene War, in black paint.

Paint had also been spattered on the grass, where a fire had also been lit.

At the time it was thought GM crop protesters may have been responsible but Marianne Bennett, from South Lakeland Friends of the Earth, said activists are only pledged to dig up GM crops, not vandalise ancient monuments.

The 2,000-year-old stone circle, on the south-eastern side of the common, comes under the protective care of English Heritage.

I notice that the vandals apparently also managed to take away up to 2,000 years from the site, since it is now '2,000 year(s)- old'.

Just a very brief update on the scratched Cove stone I mentioned. I was there two days later and the scratches had been beautifully removed and I couldn't tell they had even been there. EH or a loving friend I know not.

I've just been having a chat with a friend who has an anti-graffiti removal and stone restoration business. If it is remotely helpful he could offer some advice, but would need to know what type of stone this is. He also thought that EH had used laser treatments in the past with great success, though he doesn't keep up with megaliths and ancient site work doing most of his work on more modern monuments.

Have EH been informed yet or consulted and what do they have to say?

Chemical protection would be very expensive given the number of sites at risk in this country. It would also not stop what I saw on the largest of the Cove stones at Avebury the other week, 'Katie' in foot high letters scratched onto it. I had steam coming out of my ears!

It seems to me that this sort of madness is becoming commonplace, should not such artefacts be coated with a barrier coating so that paint could be removed?. Arthur, Burbage, Leicestershire.

I suspect such a coating would kill the lichens, which a lot of us also want to be preserved.
