Holy Well in Cheshire. Found on the left hand side of Station Road, as you leave the village of Burton on the Wirral. The remains of this well were restored and the garden made in 1975 by Ellesmere Port Borough Council and although it is first mentioned in the early 1600s it may have been used iron age settlements at Burton Point and the Anglo-Saxon settlement.

By the nineteenth century it had become known as Hampston's Well after a family who had lived in Burton since the sixteenth century. The alternative name, Patrick's well may be confused or related to St Patrick's well at Bromborough not far distance located on one side of the common land bounded The Manor Court concerning was responisble for the well and constables charged with cleaning the well each year and all able-bodied men of Burton were required to help under pain of a fine of six pence. There were also lawyers regarding washing of clothes at the well or turning well water out of its course.

Note: Lots of new photos from this Wirral Holy Well.

Since lockdown the site has been cleaned up dramatically by a group of community volunteers, the group can be found on Facebook as the friends of Hamptons well, the pool has been cleared of silt and work is ongoing to repair the cobble surround of the pool. Further weed and vegetation clearance has been undertaken as well.

Struck me that the site is in need of a big tidy up; lots of mud, severely overgrown - clarity of interpretation, unless visiting in winter - is for the determined.
