Hillfort in Franklin County, Ohio. The earthwork surrounds an area at the top of a 100 foot cliff that overlooks the Oletangy River. It consists of an outer ditch and an inner embankment, with three gaps.

It is assumed that the works were constructed by a culture designated as the “Cole Tradition”. This group of people (known by pottery styles and stonework) built protective earthworks around village sites, some of which are dated between 80 AD and 1300 AD.

The earthworks and the river overlook are at the end of a 2 mile long, gravel and wood chip faced trail, the “Overlook Trail.” The trail begins at the park’s Oak Coves Picnic Area and may be hiked to the earthworks during daylight hours when the park is open. Highbanks Metropark also has a small nature center with some displays on the park’s prehistory near the park entrance (off of Ohio State Road 23.)

Re: Highbanks Park Works by Anonymous on Tuesday, 19 May 2009
Several years ago, my father and I visited Serpent, Adena, and Mound City, a very meaningful experience. Unfortunately , the Adena site needs greater protection--if 200+ individuals are buried there, then some idiot was riding a motorcycle over that mass grave that day. Chilling to think of such a lack of understanding. Regardless, while getting lost on a couple of Chillicothe-area rural roads, we saw even more small earthworks that were not on any maps I had--the area still is populated with a number of such constructions.
