Ancient Temple in Attica

Mound at beach in the middle of a tourist town thought to contain the remains of an Artemis temple, though not much is visible to photograph or warrant attempting to find a parking place. There is an other much better Artemis temple in Vrauron just South.

TRYGAEUS: Why, 'tis Theoria, with whom we used formerly to go to Brauron, to get tipsy and frolic. I had the greatest trouble to get hold of her.

Artemis was revered in this area from the 7th century BCE, but the temple found on the beach here on the beach is classical (500-340 BCE).Euripedes says in " Iphigenia in Tauris" that it was here that Iphigenia returned to Greece with her brother Orestes. According to this alternative version of the myth Artemis spirited her away before she was sacrificed so that the Greeks could go fight in Troy. She then left her with the with the Taureans in Crimea. Her brother founded the temple here with a statue of Artemis they brought with them. Iphigenia went on to serve as a priestess in the Temple of Artemis down the road at Vravona. Another playwright, Menander, says that the youth of Athens would come here for wild Dionysian-type parties. So at least that hasn't changed. Perhaps this is why I have always found the entrance to the site firmly locked, though you can see it from the street.
It must have been a wild and beautiful site back in the day, but is now in the middle of a seaside town and looks a bit forlorn. Only the foundations are left. The temple of Artemis at Vravona is much more impressive.

Menander's comedy Epitrepontes mentions the place:
"Last year they both went down to a festival, the Tauropolia,
That's held in one of the seaside villages. It's a local thing,
But lots of young people go there from Athens. Why?
Well, the girls go because the only way they're allowed out
Is if it's something religious, and the boys go to see the girls.
Oh, yes, and they all go to drink and dance and listen to music.
If that doesn't sound religious to you, you don't know Athenians."

And Orestes, learn well my commands – for you hear
the voice of the goddess although you are not present –
set forth taking the (sacred) image and your sister,
and when you reach god-built Athens,
there is a place on the outermost borders
of Attica, a neighbor of the Karustia ridge,
sacred, and my people name it Halai.
Build a temple there and set up the wooden image
    – named for the Tauric land and for your struggles,
which you endured wandering through Greece
due to the goads of the Furies. And in the future mortals
shall sing hymns to the goddess Artemis Tauropolos.
And set up this law: whenever the people keep the festival
as a payment of your sacrifice, hold a sword
at a man's throat and draw blood,
so that by this the goddess may have her holy honors.

    Euripides, Iphigeneia in Tauris 1446–1468.
