Broomridge 2
Broomridge 2 submitted by Infinite_Fate : Again, the Westernmost carved rock on Goatscrag Hill this time looking West - you can better make out the sense of this carving being *part* of the landscape rather than simply being on it. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in Northumberland

Just under a mile WNW of Roughting Lynn are some carved outcrops of Rocks. These are spread over 3 sites (including Broomridge panels). These are by no means the most spectacular but simply those which I feel carry the best ambience. Clearly you are free to roam Goatscrag Hill and discover your own favourite!

Broomridge 2 is located west of Goatscrag and Broomridge 1. This panel is decorated with simple cup-marks and cup-and-ring marks, one of them with seven rings.

For more information see England's Rock Art ERA-7 and the Internet Archive: Beckensall 9 Broomridge 2, which adds: "Large dome of rock that has two distinct sets of markings: one is the outline and various stages of excavation of large millstones at the east end of the rock, and cups and rings elsewhere."

Although not as widely spread as on Doddington Moor there is probably as much variation in this area as around Doddington. In addition to cup and rock marks there are also horse hoof shaped carvings and possible animal carvings at Goatscrag although there is apparently some discussion as to whether the animal shapes (perhaps horses or goats) are modern additions. There is a good path up to the carvings from either Ford Moss Nature Reserve or from the Routin Lynn site. On a good day this would make an ideal stopping point on a shorter walk around the area taking in Roughtin Linn, Goatscrag and the fort between Ford Moss and Ford Common.

This rock art panel is located on Open Access land.
