Penmon Priory and Church
Penmon Priory and Church submitted by TimPrevett : One of the two Crosses inside Penmon Church. This is in the nave, and taken in very poorly lit conditions; I did not have my tripod with me, so this was one of a number attempts at getting a decent picture! See main entry for more details. Three ancient crosses, two 10th Century in Penmon Church, and one 12th Century in adjoining Penmon Priory.

Penmon Church is still in use, so is open subject to services; the adjacent priory is ruinous and access all the time. A sizeable parking area is obvious upon getting there.

On entering the church, if it is cloudy outside, you may wish to locate the lights. It was dim on a cloudy February day on our visit, and difficult to see much of worth. On entering the church, turn left, and there is a sliding screen door that goes to the right. Once through here, to the right are some heavy curtains; the light switches are just behind these on the wall! (make sure to turn them off before leaving).

Once the lights are on, the first cross in the south transept of the church (opposite the curtain) becomes more visible. This is likely 10th Century, with Irish and Scandinavian influences, and probably carved from a school of craftsmen in the Cheshire area. The font to the west of the building may have been the original base of the cross.

The other cross is prominently set at the side of the nave, with probably the same origins and period. There is an extremely faint carving, thought to be St Anthony's temptation, with accompanying beast-headed demons. This cross was placed in here in 1977, having been some way off outside.

There are numerous carvings about the nave of the church which make for intriguing study, and on the outside of the south western end of the church, above a door, is a carving of a self-consuming beast (dragon?).

The 12th Century Cross is in the Augustinian Priory, just on the left through an entrance furthest away from the parking.

The area was a special, holy place, from at least the 6th Century, with St Seiriol's residence and well being a couple minutes walk away.

Penmon Priory and Church
Penmon Priory and Church submitted by Sunny100 : Illustration of the wheel-headed cross (no1) in Penmon priory church. It dates from c1000 CE and has both Celtic and Scandinavian designs. The front has depiction of the temptation of St Anthony with two devilish figures standing at either side of him (or Christ being seized by jews). In the lower panel a warrior on horseback. There is also interlacing, knotwork and key-patterning. The reverse has... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Penmon Priory and Church
Penmon Priory and Church submitted by TimPrevett : The rear of the southern cross. This is an immensely difficult angle to photograph. Myself and tripod are forced into the corner as far as possible. The truncated side of the cross is due to it having been used as a lintel for a window on occasion. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Penmon Priory and Church
Penmon Priory and Church submitted by TimPrevett : The front of the southern cross; also to its right is a figure. We could not ascertain if this figure was a Sheela Na Gig. The CADW guidebook did not mention it, neither did the church leaflet. So, is that a yes, but embarrassed to admit it? Nonetheless, much here to ponder and take in. The truncated side of the cross is due to it having been used as a lintel for a window on occasion. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Penmon Priory and Church
Penmon Priory and Church submitted by TimPrevett : The western cross, with font (which was likely the base of the southern cross. The shadows on the walls I quite like here, though were not obvious to me at the time. Andy, who joined us for the Sunday, Victor (whatisthat) and Glenn gather around for discussion and photos. Is it possibe to use the grid references that you have placed within this article in my appendix (that isnt getting marked) for my dissertation on 'Celtic' crosses?? It is basically a summary table of the data i have collected from the crosses of North Wales and would appreciate using the grid refernces you have placed within this article. Of course the article and your name would be fully referenced within the study.

Many Thanx
