Devil's Dyke (Hertfordshire)
Devil's Dyke (Hertfordshire) submitted by Thorgrim : East of Wheathamstead at TL186133 are two dykes, one of which is Devil's Dyke. 12m deep and 40m across at its widest, the dyke is of the Iron Age. It has been suggested that the dyke, overlooking the marshy Lea valley, formed part of the tribal defence of Cassivellaunus which was attacked by Ceasar in 54BC. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Devil's Dyke (Hertfordshire)
Devil's Dyke (Hertfordshire) submitted by JoAtherton : This humble track through a wooded earthwork is where local tribal leader Cassivellaunus led the resistance against the Roman invasion but was defeated by Julius Caesar in 54BC. Today it's a peaceful hollow filled with dappled sunlight, birdsong and quite a lot of dog poo. (Vote or comment on this photo)

FYI: The name of this site is Devil's Dyke, not Devils' Dyke (i.e. the apostrophe needs to be moved).

    Hi, pjlythe1, thanks for pointing this out. Curiously, there is an entry on Historic England for this site - see Historic England List ID 1003521 (Wheathampstead earthwork incorporating Devils Dyke and the Slad), where the leave the apostrophe out of "Devil's". But you are correct, the rules of grammar say because 'Devil' is singular, the apostrophe should indeed be moved (if in doubt see Apostrophe Usage Chart) - now amended. Thanks.

      Hi Anne,

      Yes, I'm not sure why Historic England have omitted the apostrophe, but being a stickler for accuracy with these things I thought I should flag up the correct name for use on here. I'm fairly new to the Megalithic website and I'm finding it to be a great resource.
