Trattle Howe
Trattle Howe submitted by johndhunter : Trattle Howe (Site Of) at SE 68465 98623 – Viewed looking north easterly, September 2024. The ‘Pile of Stones’ and marked as such on the 1:25 OS Map is on the Parish boundary line and at the northern edge of the barrow, it is obscured slightly by the red and white marker pole that I stuck in front of it. The wooden post with the white painted top to the left of the ‘Pile of Stones’ is al... (Vote or comment on this photo)
On Blakey Ridge about 400m (¼ of a mile) to the south of Blakey Junction is an old sandstone quarry whose northern edge is the ‘Site of’ a bronze age round barrow, named Trattle Howe on historical OS maps. The 1857 OS map shows the barrow still all in one piece to the immediate north and still separate from the quarry.

See HERE. When the map opens, zoom in to the top left and locate Blakey House then just follow the boundary line south past Little Blakey (Blakey Junction) until you come to Trattle Howe, which is centred on the boundary line. The later 1914 OS map still shows Trattle Howe as an entity with now a ‘Pile of Stones’ at its northern edge, see HERE. When the map opens, zoom in to the top right quadrant and locate Little Blakey (Blakey Junction) then follow the boundary line south to Trattle Howe. The ‘Pile of Stones’ at SE 68462 98627 (my GPS) acts as a boundary stone as it still does today (2025)*. The subsequent 1952 OS map, see HERE no longer shows the barrow as an entity but as a ‘Site of’ implying that it has been eradicated by the quarry. The present day (2025) 1:25 OS map doesn’t even show the quarry let alone the barrow (Site of) only the ‘Pile of Stones’.

*Anomaly – Inexplicably, present day (2025) 1:25 OS maps show this ‘Pile of Stones’ slightly to the west of the boundary line. This is incorrect, it is, as stated above at SE 68462 98627 (from my gps) , directly on the boundary line, where it should be.

Trattle Howe is the NYMNPA HER No. 2378 though it doesn’t name it as such, only describing it as a bronze age round barrow and says evidence for it is existence is an earthwork, implying to some extent that it has not been totally eradicated by the quarry. So with all the above in mind I went and had a look to see if there was anything still visible or had the quarry obliterated it. Historical OS mapping, the NYMNPA HER map and Aerial Archaeology mapping all put the centre of the barrow at SE 68465 98623 where there is in fact a slight rise in the ground. This is to the immediate north of the top edge of the quarry and about 4m to the south of the ‘Pile of Stones’. So yes its probably still there to some degree if the above listed mapping information is correct and its not just quarry spoil.

It should be noted the HERR MONUMENT 58862 which was last updated in 1974 basically says that there are no remains left. However whilst they talk about a modern cairn (Pile of Stones?) the grid reference they actually give for Trattle Howe is SE 68480 98630 which is a fair bit out from what it should be, so I am not sure what they are looking at . The NYMNPA HER is probably the most up to date record and as stated says the evidence for its existence is an earthwork.

Just a thought – Whilst writing this up I noted that the boundary line along this part of Blakey Ridge all went through the Howes ( Barrows): Blakey, Little Blakey, Trattle, Kettle and Pike, which suggests to me that the ancient parish boundaries were drawn up to the Howes and because they run in a line following the ridge, that they had in fact probably marked a boundary of one sort or another from the time they were built.

Trattle Howe submitted by johndhunter : Trattle Howe (Site Of) at SE 68465 98623 – Viewed looking northerly, September 2024. Note: Blakey Junction, specifically was about 100 metres to the east and is where the railway lines which ran round Rosedale converged before coming to this point and then went under the road. Nowadays the whole area tends to be called Blakey Junction.

Trattle Howe submitted by johndhunter : Trattle Howe (Site Of) at SE 68465 98623 – Viewed looking north westerly, September 2024. The Railway ran from Blakey Junction for about 7 miles to the moor above Ingleby Greenhow. The wagons carrying ironstone from the mines in Rosedale were then detached from the engine and lowered down from the moor on an Incline. They were then attached to another engine and taken to the blast furnaces o...
