Geraint1 visited on 16th Jul 2024 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 4 Apparently this is part of a stone circle, according to some "dowsers", despite there being absolutely no evidence of a circle Apart from "the" Castlerigg stone circle. The dowsers may have been better employed getting out a compass. This stone, set approximately 75m from Castlerigg stone circle, is on an alignment with the centre of the circle of southwest to northeast with the circle to the northeast. It is obviously the stone circles marker stone to indicate the direction on the summer solstice sunrise. This is a common arrangement.

The outlier stone of Castlerigg stone circle. Or is it a remaining stone of Castlerigg West, a possible, and now lost stone circle.

Stukeley saw the other ring in 1725 - but no one else has ever seen or recorded. He noted it was "towards the town".

Castlerigg W submitted by nicoladidsbury : We found another stone, which looks like a standing stone, lodged in the drystone wall nearby. The main stone circle and the outlier are visible over the top of the wall. It doesn't look part of the fabric of the wall.

The stone definately looked deeply buried. It has waterworn striations running vertically down its face. It doesn't look part of the fabric of the wall.

A small team from Ridings Dowsers visited this site on 16th & 17th. June 2012 as part of a research project following the Earth Energy Lines from St. Bees in Cumbria.
The "energies" of the site were at a low ebb and at first, dowsing proved difficult. However, after about an hour, our presence was accepted and we made some fine progress. Tha main areas of interest were not the Stone Circle but we discovered two large stones, previously unrecorded, lodged at the base of the dry-stone wall to West of the Circle. These were lying flat, supporting the structure.
The first was about 6ft. in length and when dowsed proved to have originally been part of the Stone Circle. Further dowsing showed me its original position. The second was further to the South and was broken into three pieces but the overall shape was very clear. When intact, it too would have been about 6ft. in length. Unfortunately I was unable to establish whether it had originally been part of the Stone Circle but "instinct" told me it had.
The following day we returned very early; the "energies" were abundant and welcoming and we were easily able to plot the Earth Energy Lines which flowed into and out of the Stone Circle.
Castlerigg Stone Circle needs constant healing. The influx of sightseers who have no reverence or understanding of its nature do not appreciate its true beauty. It's as though the monument "shuts down" as the day progresses. When you visit, make sure you arrive before the tourists!

    As a sightseer with no understanding or eye for beauty I now know what I'll irreverantly do with the next pair of rods I see being sported by all knowing pompous dowsers .

    Hi, thanks for the report. I'm not clear on which stones you found and wonder if you could help me out please. Are they the same ones that are pictured on this page, or are they different ones? If they are different, we'd appreciate a pic if possible.

    There are more comments on the main Castlerigg sitepage about the general disrespect, damage and too much wear and tear caused by mass tourism (as well as reference to specific vandalism) It could help a great deal if the tour companies would ask each coachload of visitors not to climb on the stones just before they disembark. There is a small sign at the entrance in English, but it appears very few people stop to read it. Considering the multinational array of visitors there, probably a large percentage wouldn't understand it anyway. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=42

    Finding a quiet time at the main circle is a wonderful experience. I've been there alone on a fiercely stormy night and with just 2 other people one midday near Winter Solstice where the air almost crackled with atmosphere. For me, it definitely feels much more alive in those situations than when it's packed

I slept within the circle in 1992, the circle of the stones, the circle of the mountains and a beautiful circle of cloud, with clear sky above us - very memorable and uplifting

Terry and I took photos of the outlier stone, next to the stone wall style. A beautiful stone. Then we noticied another stone in the wall. Could these stones be part of a "destroyed" Castlerigg West stone circle.
I'll post pictures of both stones on this page, and ask if this is the correct place for the photos.
