Standing Stone (Menhir) in Dumfries and Galloway

Single standing stone half a mile to the north of Gatehouse of Fleet:

Harper's Hill Standing Stone, marked at grid reference NX 5973 5726 on the Ordnance Survey Map, has the River of Fleet (with 'Standing Stone Pool' in its bend at this point) running to the immediate west of the stone. In the next field, to the north west of the stone, is a Roman Fortlet.

Sitting in the apparent centre of a bowl surrounded by hills with flowing water nearby, this would be an obvious focal point for a standing stone or a stone circle. The stone is declared a ‘Standing Stone’ on the OS Map; however, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) have decreed it is probably a rubbing stone. There is a very brief entry on Canmore ID 63653

The stone looks like others we've seen in the region, although it is badly knocked and damaged along one side, with heavy plough marks on the face away from the cemetery. Whether it is in its original position is difficult to say although it seems a certainty it has fallen and been re-erected at some point in the recent past.

I am not sure where the name 'Harper's Hill' comes from, as I am unable to find a ‘Harper’s Hill’ on the OS map – unless I just haven’t looked hard enough, which is entirely possible!

Directions: from the A75, turning north into Gatehouse of Fleet, drive down the High Street until you reach the clock tower (on the right hand side of the road); take the turn immediately opposite - down Church Street, which after a short distance turns into Castramont Road, which then turns into Memory Lane.

This is a dead-end road, which ends with the cemetery on the left hand side. There is parking for a few cars just before the cemetery and a further few spaces at its far end, next to the gate leading to the field with Harper’s Hill Standing Stone in it.
