I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 9th Oct 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 St Aidan's Well, Bamburgh: This well seemed to form a ‘hub’ for visitors, with a school party and tourists sitting on the benches and grass around this structure, so we needed to make two trips to this well. By 5.30pm there was no one around (apart from the blue wheelie bins lined up along the street!). Obviously a modern structure, but this appears to be the original holy well associated with the church. The well is now dry, which is a shame, as I'd have loved to see the water gushing into the basin. It might be a modern well housing, but this may well be an ancient site. In 1947, when Revd Binnall and Miss Dodds produced their list and descriptions of Holy Wells in Northumberland and Durham, the village green was a small plantation of trees. Pastscape notes the name 'St Aidan's Well' is not known locally, but I don't know what it is called. The antiquarian notes mention it was mentioned as 'Edvn. Well' although I'm not sure was Edvn means.

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Northumberland

This holy well is mentioned in the Antiquarian publication "Holy Wells in Northumberland and Durham" by the Revd. P.B.G. Binnall and Miss M. Hope Dodds, 4th series No. 10, page 19 (1947). It is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 7619 and Historic England List ID 1276950.

Historic England describe the current well housing as a 'pant and trough' at the eastern end of The Grove or Village Green. It has long been associated with St Aidan's Church nearby. In 1947, the green was a small plantation of trees.

Whilst the well is currently dry, because of its attractive position with views east towards Bamburgh Castle, and the benches on either side, it acts as a focal point for visitors. It has an interesting lion's head on its eastern side; the spout emerges from the lion's mouth. On the northern side, a rusty iron plate indicates the location of the pump handle, now long gone.

St Aidan's Well (Bamburgh) submitted by Anne T : Standing just west of the well, looking east across it to Bamburgh Castle. We returned to the well after all the school parties and most of the tourists had gone home, only to find a long line of bright blue recycling bins had been put out for collection! I tried to hide as many as I could behind the pillars of the upper structure of the well. (Vote or comment on this photo)
