Finavon, an elongated heavily vitrified timber-laced fort with a well in it, measures about 500' by a maximum of 120' internally. Excavations carried out in 1933-4 by Childe (1935) showed that the wall was about 20' thick and that it stood 12' internally and 16' externally beneath the grass-grown rubble. There was a row of dwellings with hearths under the shelter of the N wall. Pot-making, spinning and metal-working were carried out in the lee of the S wall. The finds, including gritty plain potsherds, stone whorls, flints, an iron ring, and a thick jet ring, are in the NMAS (Acc. Nos: AO 104, BE 480, HH 386-416).
In 1966 MacKie dug two trenches against the inner faces of the N and S ramparts, and three radio-carbon dates were obtained - c. 390, c. 480, and c. 665 BC - indicating that the fort was in use from the 7th century BC until at least the late 5th or early 4th century before being destroyed.

(User Info | Send a Message) | Condition: Not much left of the structure, but the verges clearly indicate the basic outline of the fort. Absolutley fantastic vantage point with views extending out to sea on a clear day. An unfortunate feature of this site is that there has been a mobile telphone mast erected 20 yards or so to the west of the old fort.
Ambience: In Earth/Cosmic energy terms, this is an immensely powerful site! Infact very probably the jewel of the whole region (and I have got around a few sites). Warning for tree-huggers though, although finavon hillfort is essentially a hugely positive place, it is also an extremely heavy place. This site was for a long time the most important military establishment in the region and the residual energies remind the sentient modern day sacred sites day-tripper exactly how hardcore and violent this site once was! Words that would best describe the nature of the ambience at this site would be; controlled agression; enhanced sensations of personal worth; feelings of belonging (or sometimes not belonging!!); and the fort's exculsive and distinct brand of beauty and value. I could talk in great length about this site describing its ambience and energy in great detail. But, the last thing I will mention about its ambience is the three distinct animalistic energies that occur upon this site. (This is the bit that people with a similar understanding of these things as I have might greatly apprecaite knowing about.....and others will consider mad and deluded.)
1) Large Buffalo/Bull type deity: Dispensenser of 'power vision', aggression and personal courage. An undefeated champion!
2) Elephant type ambience: Strange for Scotland but I have experienced an Elephant style ambience fairly consistently. It was autumn of 2002 when this ambience seemed to be consistantly present.
And by far the most significantly,
3) Giant Silvery Bear/Yeti type Energy Being!
Posesses Supreme Wisdom over other energy phenomena. Radiates energy which translates into immense high of pure silvery excellence. This energy being's presence can be sensed regularly but the date upon which I experienced its presence at its fullest capacity was on the morning of October 6th 2000. This remains my most valued 'earth-powers' experience and would consider trading in a limb in order to relive the experience again!
Most people reading this will consider it to be deluded madness, but I have grown bored and tired of trying to convince such people of a phenomena that I personally recognise as very tangible and a plain and simple reality of the world in which we live.
