Hillfort in Telemark
This hillfort is next to the one at Harstad one of the very few hillforts located inside a modern town/city and one of the more "urban" hillforts I have visited. From a car bussiness parking lot it is a short walk along a footpath to the east and up to the hillfort. The main road pass just north of the hillfort and from its northern wall the cliff drops directly down onto the road. To the east of the hillfort is a roundabout and another road goes past the hill on its south east side. To the south west is a river, Farelva.
The site consists of a hillfort with a burial cairn inside the hillfort area. Bygdeborgen: The hill falls off steeply towards the NE, E and S. Towards the N and W the slope is gentler and here the hill is fortified with two walls. Wall 1 is mostly very clear, but in some places a little eroded, especially in the East. It is built of quarry stone, in some places larger blocks. Width 2-3m, h 0.3-1.3m. It starts at the north-east corner of the hill and runs in a WNW direction for about 15m, where the wall has been extensively collapsed. It then turns towards the SW in a l of 17m. Here a path goes through the castle wall. The wall then continues 12m in a SSW direction, then turns towards the SE in a l of 22m where it ends in a steep slope. The wall is largely the same height throughout.
17m ESE of wall 1's NE end lies: Wall 2, which is somewhat less obvious in the terrain, but quite clearly marked. In some places, it has been heavily excavated, especially in the east. Built of quarry stone and large blocks, partly overgrown with moss and grass. The wall slopes evenly downwards towards the East. Width 2.5-5m, h 0.3-1.3m. In east it is unclearly marked. It runs in a WNW direction in a l of 35m. Here is a cliff on the N side of the wall. Then it turns in the direction WSW for 16m. Here the wall is widest, up to 5m wide. It then turns WNW l 15m where the marking becomes very unclear. The distance between wall 1 and 2 approx. 17m. Here there are some scattered blocks and some hints of a wall. Presumably it was a continuous wall.
On the plateau on the west side of the hillfort area, approx. 30m east of wall 1's southern end is a round cairn, unclearly marked. Soil mixed. End large boulders at the edges. Overgrown with moss and heather. D 8m, h 0.3m. Just below the wall on the southwest end of the plateau is a structure. The structure is a circular stone wall. What function this structure has had is very uncertain.
