The south mound is 10m high and the North one 8m, possibly king Gorm the Old's burial site. The day I visited it was sunny and blustery which gave the whole site an eerie feel as I was the only visitor for about an hour.

The site consists of two very large standing stones that are intricately carved with Runic inscriptions, with the carvings on each stone dating from the 10th century AD. These stones were raised under the auspices of King Gorm the Old of Denmark and Harald Bluetooth of Denmark respectively.

The stone carved under Bluetooth's reign commemorates his parents. Since Bluetooth was converted to Christianity, these stones represent a significant period in Danish history characterizing the nation's transition from paganism to Christianity.

Jelling stone vandalised with graffiti by Andy B on Tuesday, 22 February 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
Jutland police have found the person who disfigured the larger UNESCO World Heritage Jelling stone with graffiti earlier this week.

The 15-year-old young man has admitted the misdeed, was arrested Thursday and is to be presented in court Friday charged with vandalism, according to Steen Edeling of the Southeast Jutland Police.

Apart from the Jelling stone, upon which the word ‘Gelwane’ was sprayed, similar disfigurement was found in the Jelling cemetery and at a building in Vejle.

Although it was initially unclear whether the Jelling stone could be cleaned without leaving a permanent disfigurement of the stone’s patina, National Museum specialists suggest they should be able to remove the green paint in a way that will keep the historical monument’s patina.

This morning local Text-TV reported that the first part of the cleaning proces was succesful in removing 97% of the grafitipaint, the missing 3% now has to await better weather condition.

Allow my primitive attempt of translating the latest news about the Jelling Stones here in Denmark:

Archaeologist fear the Jelling stones crumbling
        09. May 2011 16:50 Culture

Wednesday the process begins of securing the two Jelling stones against the weather, wind and naughty fingers.

Wednesday morning, a large crane with a 70 meter long arch thus will move the small runic stone, which in a few weeks are to be moved into a glass display case.

But winter has been harsh on the stone. It consists of many layers, and when water seeps in and then freezes, the stone cracks. Therefore, archaeologists worry that the stone will crumble.

        Extra fragile stone
        - I am a professional nervous. I have worked on restoring dolmens and passage graves and are therefore accustomed with dealing with stones in this weight class, says Heritage Agency archaeologist Jørgen Westphal and continues:

        - But we are not accustomed with handling stones, which is so fragile. Therefore, we have taken extra precautions. We've got a blacksmith making a special suspension, in order for us to be able to lift the stone in a more gentle way, says Jørgen Westphal.

The stone are to be lifted about ten meter away and to come back to the original place in a few weeks, when the foundation is in place. Archaeologists have chosen not to lift the large Jelling stone, but will build the glasshousings foundation around the stone.

        Unique World Heritage
Three months ago, the Jelling stones was vandalized. A 15-year-old boy later admitted to have painted the stones with green graffiti and the cryptic message 'Gelwan E'.

Rune stones are on Unesco's list of unique world heritage. This World heritage consists of two rune stone, a medieval church and the two largest mounds, from the Viking era.

These stones are on the Unesco list because it reflects the first official transition from paganism to Christianity in Scandinavia.

Re: Jelling Stones by Anonymous on Thursday, 04 October 2007
Was it Harald Bluetooth who forced Christianity onto his subjects via torture, or was that another nordic ruler ?

I've read somewhere that one of them really used horrible devices to "convert" people from pagansim. pretty much as the Spaniards did with the "santa irmandad" or the "holy inquisition".

My husband is related to harald the Bluetooth and I don''t believe harald would''ve done any torture to the people to change to being Christian. But what may really blow your mind is my husband grandfather Jens Jensen was the first Mormon missionary in Denmark. So I believe he finished haralds job he set out to do.
