Like many carved stones it has been travelling. It was found in 1717, brought to the church and placed on the floor acting as a doorstep. Later it was moved to the cemetary stonewall. When the new porch was built in 1816 it was moved indoors again. In 1841 the stone was sold to a museum in Kiel (now Germany, then Denmark) and later moved to Archäologisches Landesmuseum Gottorp Castle. In 1987 it was given back to the church, and placed upright in the eastern corner of the porch.
The many years as a doorstep has taken its toll, so the carving is not easy to decipher, but it should be like the old drawing. The runic text is: 'Ketil Urnæ ligir hir' (Ketil Urne lies here). The picture is called 'tree of life' and it is a fundamental symbol in many mythological, religous, and philosophical universal traditions, spanning from Asian shamanism to Genesis to Yggdrasil of the Scandinavian mythology. The cross has also been interpreted as a sword.
