Evidence for an Iron Age site for salt production have been discovered in Werl (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). Because the ground water is very salty in this region (Cretaceous level of the Münsterländer Becken), it was used as basis for salt production.
Several clay potsherds belonging to briquetage have been found. They have been used to seethe the saline in the salter. The remains of the salter oven have been found as well.
Based on the great number of finds, it is assumed that the majority of the produced salt was intended for trading. So far, Werl is the only site for major salt production in Westphalia.
