The remains of a two months old child from the Bronze Age were discovered in 1982 in Ostbevern-Schirl (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). The child was buired in two telescoped pithoi, which served as coffin.

Pithoi are storage vessels. The child was placed in the first, undecorated vessel, which is 27 cm high. Then, the second vessel was placed above its head and upper part of the body. This second vessel measures 34 cm and is decorated with three flutings.
The pithoi have preserved the fragile bones of the child relatively well. It is not known, whether the site was originally marked with a burial mound or not.

Pithos burials are rare, but several examples from the early Bronze Age have been found in Europe.

The pithoi of Ostbevern-Schirl have been removed from the original place of discovery (see coordinates at the top of the page). Today, the pithoi are shown as part of the permanent exhibition in the LWL-Museum für Archäologie in Herne.
