Barrow Cemetery, a standing stone and part of a broken medieval cross in Vest-Agder
Close to the old Bjelland church is a small barrow cemetery from the iron age. It consists of three small round barrows, the remains of a large round barrow, one standing stone and one part of a broken medieval cross. The grass and vegetation here are regularly cut down so the artifacts are easy to see.
The small round barrows are around 6 metres in diameter and around 0,5 metres in height. They are easy to see even with the small size and have nice rounded shapes. The mark where a larger barrow was excavated is still visible in the centre of the cemetery.
The gates of the stone fence surrounding the modern church is made from two large stone slabs originally parts of the burial chamber in the large excavated barrow. They are around 2 metres long and 1,3 metres wide. No information about findings in the barrow is known.
The remains of the stone cross is around 50cm in height and has a strange shape like a dogs head, it is probably the lower part of a medieval stone cross that has long since been broken in smaller pieces.
The standing stone is around 1,8 metres in height, around 30cm wide and 20cm thick. It has a nice rectangular shape. It was in later years used as a pillory and had a hole bored trough it for a neck chain to chain people as punishment.
