West Norway's largest barrow cemetery, in Hordaland Hæreidsmoen. Consisting of over 400 burials, most of them cairns it is located in a very beautiful high natural plateau in the innermost part of Hardanger fjord. The cemetery is divided into two parts, Sjohaugen to the north west and Hereid to the south east. The site has with information posters and several walking paths giving is the appearance of a public park.
From written sources we know that the barrow cemetery was extended to the north but this part have later gotten lost. Hereid contains the most burials, around 350 while around 50 are located in the Sjohaugen part. There could be many more burials under flat ground that has no grave marking. The oldest graves date back to early iron age, 500-600 AD while most are from middle to late iron age.
In the middle of the cemetery on both sides of the road are the most large barrows and cairns in a NW-SE "belt". In another belt NNW-SSE east of group 1 is a number of smaller cairns very close to each other or arranged in lines. 60m East of group 2 is another number of small cairns close together and also in small lines. Some are elongated cairns but most are round. Another large group of cairns are located to the NE inside a grazing ground for horses. This part is also ruggid and have large blocks of stone outcrops and the forest is a bit more tight here. To the SE is another group of cairns, these ones are a little larger and with a little more distance between them, some are laid around natural stone boulders.
The part in the centre of the terrace and SW of the road are the largest cairns. Among them a large round cairn with a very clear circle of larger stones around it. It is around 18 metres in diameter and around 2 metres in height. Most cairns in this area are large, from 10 to 18 metres in diameter and 1 to 2 metres in height. This is also the area of the cemetery which has least vegetation and it is a beautiful walk around in the park!
Next to the road further to the south east is another group of large cairns, around 10-15 metres in diameter, they are flatter, only around 0,5 to 1 metre in height but still clearly visible.
Inside a fenced in horse grazing field and in more rugged terrain where the terrain starts going uphill and become more rocky there is even more cairns, one of them is a large one, 18 metres in diameter and around 2 metres in height. Inside this tighter forest part are also numerous smaller cairns.
The remains of a settlement was found at Lægreid across the river from Hæreid to the south west. It had a longhouse of almost 50 metres and another one around 30 metres. This area have probably had a large village back in the iron age.
