Round Barrows in Vest-Agder, Norway
At the village of Snartemo there was several huge barrow or burial monuments from the age of migration. The findings in these barrows are well known as the "Snartemo findings." The Snartemo 2 and 4 belongs to the most well equipped burials from the migration period. The most famous of the Snartemo findings are the Snartemo sword, one of the most beautifully ornamented swords ever found in scandinavia and certainly the most beautifully found in Norway! The sword was oddly enough not found in one of the large barrows, but were found in a flat ground stone cist by some farmers plowing a field.
Today there is only one visible small round barrow, around 12 metres in diameter and 1 metre in height. Just close to the barrow is a 6 metres high model of the Snartemo sword and a stone plate and some informaton posters.
The Snartemo findings are listed as Snartemo 1 to 4.
The Snartemo 1 consisted of only a bone comb found in a large burial cairn of unknown size in 1847. The cairn was described as "monumental size", probably over 40 metres in diameter.
Snartemo 2 was another monumental barrow, possibly also around 40 metres in diameter. It was excavated in 1878 when a local highway was gonna be constructed close to the barrow. The stone chamber inside the barrow was 5,5 metres in length and contained an ornamented sword, four spear tips, arrowheads, shield buckle, axes and knifes, two large bronze kettles, a glass made of green coloured glass which is very rare in iron age burials. The clothes from the dead person itself consisted of a golden belt buckle, golden buttons and three gold rings. The dead was laid on a bear skin.
Snartemo 3 was excavated in 1879 and it was also a monumental round barrow called "Jordeplehushaugen", it was probably also around 40 metres in diameter and it consisted of burned bones, some pottery pieces and a bronze kettle.
The Snartemo 4 is probably the most famous of the findings. The grave goods were found in a stone coffin made of large slabs. It was found by two farmers during plowing and contained the beautiful ornamented Snartemo sword, Spearheads, knifes, a glass pot, a golden belt buckle and gold fingerrings. The sword had a sheat made of woven textiles and a small swastika.
