The coal mine Rheinelbe was opened 1861 and closed as early as 1928. The Ruhr region is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. This was mainly made possible by the intense coal mining activity in this area. However, the coal mining industry in Germany declined and from the late 1950s to the year 2015 all coal mines but one (Prosper Haniel in Bottrop) were closed. While most of the buildings of the coal mining plants were teared down, turned into museums or were used for other business companies or fine arts studios, the mine tips were often left without function.
Herman Prigrann began to create the sculpture park on the Rheinelbe tip in the early 1990s. Most of the sculptures are located at the foot of the tip, which is now covered with a forest. The "megalithic“ sculptures resemble menhirs, stone rows, portals or other stone settings. The central piece is the Himmelstreppe, which was built at the highest point of the tip. The visitor can take different routes towards the Himmelstreppe. Most start at the forest at the foot of the tip and lead via serpentines to the Himmelstreppe at the bare top of the tip.
The Himmelstreppe offers the visitor a great view on the surrounding landscape. Moreover, the journey offers a remarkable experience created by the tension of the unique mixture of ancient and industrial references.
