Barrow Cemetery in Vest-Agder
The Boningshaugen Iron Age cemetery is located on a flat grassy plain with a river to the southwest. Some of the barrows are close to the river and some parts of several mounds have collapsed into the river over the years. The cemetery consists of one large and 13 smaller round barrows.
The barrow cemetery is inside a large grassy field with the area with the barrows themselves inside a small fenced area with grazing ground for sheeps. The barrows are only covered with short grass and they are easy to observe from outside the fence.
The "Boningshaugen" barrow is the largest barrow in the cemetery, it is also the barrow furthest to the north west. It is visible for many miles and is 30 metres in diameter and around 4 metres in height. It has a crater at its top so its summit appears almost "double". Even with the damage it is still a very nice example of a round barrow.
The rest of the barrows are from medium size, around 16 to 10 metres in diameter and 2 to 1,5 metres in height and some smaller sized ones, around 10 to 7 metres in diameter and from 1 to 0,5 metres in height. All the barrows are easily visible from outside the fence because of the low vegetation!
