The Dirdalen valley have two large iron age settlements and numerous barrow cemeteries and monuments. It was probably a well inhabited area during the iron age.
Frøyland is the largest of the two settlements, it has around 150 burial cairns, ancient stone fences and one large remain of a longhouse. The site is inside a grazing ground for cows and young bulls so I wasn't able to get close to get any close up photos of the site. There is a information poster next to the road.
The house remains is around 19 metres in length and 4-5 metres wide according to the kulturminnesøk website. Some of the burial cairns are easy to see from the road in the flat landscape. Some of them are close to the local road.
The barrows are around 15 metres in diameter and 1,5 to 2 metres in height. They have very pretty shapes and doesnt seem to have been damaged. The smaller cairns are 4-7 metres in diameter and can be difficult to see. Some of them can be clearing cairns from when the area was cleared for agriculture.
A chambered tomb was excavated in 1912 and proved to be from the migration period around 500AD. it is believed this area have been settled from earliest iron age up to early medieval times.
