Uralsdaughter visited on 30th Aug 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 3 You can visit this site from parking at camping on the maarnse bergweg 1, Doorn, or from the town Driebergen. GPS is useful for navigating the small forest paths to get to this. The path to it is partly closed of by trees because it is on the border of a closed of area for animals(rustgebied voor dieren).

Burial mounds are monuments built thousands of years ago to mark burial grounds. The oldest burial mounds on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug are more than 4000 years old, but the largest part was raised between 2000 and 800 BC. Initially, the prominent people of the community were buried under the hills. Many of the funerary monuments remained in use for the burial of several people in the same hill in the centuries after their construction.

Those with a keen eye will manage to spot this burial mound. This hill is located next to a small forest path near the Hydeparklaan between Doorn and Driebergen-Rijsenburg. Even from this path you still need to be able to see through the wilderness of branches and trees to see it properly (see photo). This is in stark contrast to how the burial mounds were located in prehistoric times. The builders deliberately chose to erect these in open areas, such as clearings in the woods and heaths. The burial mounds thus formed clearly visible and recognizable beacons in the landscape. There were also many burial mounds along prehistoric routes. Over time, many of the prehistoric landscapes have changed a lot due to both natural causes and human actions, such as planting forests.
