An important trading city with three natural harbours, possibly founded by colonists from Rhodes in the 7th century BCE. It was taken over by the Persians in the 6th century BCE, then the Carians in the 4th, and they welcomed Alexander in 334 BCE. Hadrian arrived in 129 CE and had a lot of new monuments erected. It was eventually abandoned in the 13th century CE.
