Barrow Cemetery in Rogaland
The barrow cemetery at Hå is one of many cemeteries along the shoreline from Kvassheim in the south to Sele in the north. In this four mile-long stretch about 600 graves are recorded. Most of these are made in the rolling-rock belt along the shoreline.
ln the 1950s the Hå cemetery was excavated. It showed that the cemetery was used between 300 and 900 AD and consists of 60 burials of at least 100 people. Many barrows had several burials. In mound No. 1, just north of the barn, there was a total of seven burials. Most of the graves are from the 5th and 6th century AD. Objects that were found suggest that around 2/3 of the burials are female graves. People who were buried at Hå field must have lived on farms in the vicinity and they have probably belonged to the upper social class.
The corpses were placed in a stone chamber on a cover of coarse gravel. Around the chamber there was a heap of large boulders. Finally, the chamber and the mound was covered with a layer of gravel.
Cairns have different shapes and sizes. Most are round, Others have a rectangular shape (these are the largest mounds). All made so that they follow the curvature of the beach. One has the shape of a boat. In the far northwest lies two large three-branched star-shaped cairns.
The most special are the elongated rectangular shaped cairns. They have a line of larger stones around the edges and a taller stone in each corner. Some of the excavated cairns have a visible burial chamber in the middle. They are from around 15 to 22 metres long and around 3-5 meres wide.
The round cairns are from 3 to around 15 metres across and from 0,5 to 2 metres in height. Some of them also have a ring of larger stones around the edges.
Most of the cemetery has been restored after the excavations. Today they can be observed in their original state. In some of them you can see one or several graves.
In the graves no human remains were found, only jewelery, weapons, some tools and clay vessels.
In women's graves beads and buckles which have been fastened to clothes were found. Many of the women received a spinning gear as a gravegood. A few men were also buried with a sword or other weapons as burial equipment.
Since the burials were placed, wind and weather have severly damaged the fabric and other gravegoods.
