A Carian city and seaport from the 7th century BCE, possibly on a much older site. It was variously controlled by the Greeks (as a member of the Delian League, 478), the Persians (with Hecatomnos, Mausolus' father, as governor, 387), then Alexander and finally, in 129 BCE it became part of the Roman Province of Asia.
There is a well-preserved theatre.
