Charkadio Cave submitted by kosthell : Sample elephant in the local museum (Vote or comment on this photo)
This cave is located in the centre of the Greek island of Tilos. During excavations carried out by the Museum of Geology and Palaeontology of the University of Athens in collaboration with the Natural History Museum of Vienna, 15,000 bones were found from 40 dwarf elephants that were 120 - 150 cm high and belonged to the species Palaeoloxodon tiliensis.

Other animals found during this excavation, but in deeper places, were deer that disappeared before the elephants arrived on the island. Bones of turtles, micro-mammals and fragments of tusks that were probably used as tools have also been found.

These finds date from 8000-7000 BC and are in the Palaeontological Museum.

There was a marvellous three-part TV series about twenty years ago that among many other Greek myths, suggested that the cyclops legend was a result of finding the skulls of dwarf elephants.

"The belief in cyclopes may have originated in P. falconeri skulls found in Sicily. As early as the fourteenth century, scholars had noted that the nasal cavity could be mistaken for a singular giant eye socket". Wikipedia.

There's a whole section on the dwarf elephants of Tilos on Wikipedia.
