Ancient Village or Settlement in Crete

Due to the Eastern end of Crete sinking, Olous is now submerged with only a few walls visible above the sea. When snorkelling though, a number of houses can be seen together with the old harbour wall. The city is Minoan and ancient writers recorded it had a population of over 40,000.

Olous
Olous submitted by sem : Looking inside the harbour towards the now submerged harbour wall. On the seabed can be seen a line of stones set into the floor. Whether these were once above sea level or were part of the harbour floor I do not know. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Olous
Olous submitted by sem : The end of a wall, in both senses of the word. I have heard many stories of divers bringing up artifacts (illegally) and have seen the remains of amphora in this area, but I have not heard of any archaeological surveys of the underwater area. Olous
Olous submitted by sem : Snorkelling past the harbour wall (on the right) to enter the harbour. Minoan cities normally had two harbours facing in different directions to facilitate sailing with different winds, but no-one has ever found Olous' second harbour. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Olous
Olous submitted by Klingon : The water is shallow. It is not so easy to snorkel there. The whole bottom is overgrown with seaweed. But still very impressive.

Olous
Olous submitted by 43559959 : Some of the remains of Olous remaining above the water.
