Remains of ancient Minoa can be seen near the bay in a small village of Marathi. Surface finds revealed that the site was occupied already in the Minoan period. In Roman period this city served as one of two ports of the nearby Aptera. Excavations unearthed remains of cisterns and baths, some of which can be seen near the bay.
