The entrance is kept locked to protect it, although guided tours can be arranged by contacting the Wolf Cave Tourist Centre. The upper part of the crack has been packed with soil, forming a cave. Cave in Finland. Northern Europe's oldest known dwelling site containing the only Neolithic finds in Nordic countries to date.

Named for its location on Wolf Mountain, Wolf Cave is the only cave in the area and was formed by erosion. It is estimated to be over 2.6 million years old with an internal area of 400 square metres.

A series of excavations have been carried out since 1996, clearing the sediment which has accumulated within the cave. A 5 metre square floor area with a burnt rock surface has been uncovered, together with 200 tools and 600 flakes which include scrapers and hammer stones.

Further details can be found on Wikipedia: Wolf Cave page

and also at: the official Susiluola Wolf Cave web site

A Tourist Centre is open daily during summer months, with an approximately 1 kilometre walk from the Centre to the Cave.

With thanks for Martti Lahti for the information.
